The Ankh is an ancient Egyptian symbol for eternal life.
Shaped like a cross with a loop at the top, the ankh here becomes an extension of the key to the temple.
It has no real connection to the Christian cross, and is often seen in tomb paintings where an image of one of the Egyptian gods extends eternal life to the pharaoh with the ankh.
