Ramses II built two temples at Abu Simbel near the Nubian border ( now Sudan), one for himself seen here, and one next to it for his favorite wife Nefertari.
The 3200+ year old temples are 19th dynasty and were built during Ramses II's reign between 1290 and 1224 BC.
Both temples were in danger of innundation when Lake Nasser was created by the building of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960's.
The temples were cut from their living rock site, and raised piecemeal in a monumental joint effort of Egypt, the US, and UNESCO .
An aerial view of the two temples can be seen in another image on this page.
