Japan is a strange mix of countryside and super-packed metropolis

One of the things that seemed so incredibly backward to me about Japan is that much of their garbage is burned. In the smaller cities, it's simply burned every day in the back yards, sending up blankets of smoke. Even in place of the usual recycling bins, many places have categories like "burnable", "non-burnable", and "plastic", where the latter means, I assume, that it's somewhat recyclable.
