A scene similar to this one caused me great anxiety. Shortly after turning around to return
to the canyon I strayed from the route I had taken to my turnaround point. A wrong turn
led me to sandy terrain lacking footpints. My tracks were my route markers for the return
hike; for a split-second I imagined getting lost in this landscape in which everything
looked like everything else. After some back-tracking I saw a familiar formation in the
distance and found an alternate way to it, where I regained my trail. Whew!
