What appears to be a 2' cactus is actually
a 32' cactus (assuming the dune is 30' deep)!
The roots extend down through the dune to the 'dirt' below.

Apparently, these cactii can outgrow the encroaching sand dune...
however, when the sand leaves the area, they quickly die from exposure.

I guess evolution still has a ways to go...
