Catedral, Santiago de Compostela 5
Here is the front of the cathedral. Many people come here on pilgrimage. They walk along a
trail which is called the "Camino de Santigo." This path begins in Southern France and runs
across Northern Spain. A 100 peseta coin was made with a map of the "Camino de Santiago" on
one side to commemorate this pilgrimage route.
Before studying in Spain I watched a tour video about Spain which mentioned the "Camino de
Santiago." It explained how the pilgrims wear large sea shells around their necks to show that
they are pilgrims. Figurines of animals dressed as pilgrims are on sale in gift shops. They carry
walking sticks and have wide brimmed hats.
At the end of the pilgrimage the pilgrims enter the square in front of the cathedral. The tour
guide took a picture of our group here, but I do not have a copy of the photo.
