that's the Owens Lake beyond. dry since the 1920's after LA took
all the water. this unpaved road gets really steep and is made up of a lot
of loose shale in places. 4WD is recommended but you can do it in a regular
car, just gets a bit hairy sometimes if you start slipping - there's some sheer
drops off this road.
