Peter, thank you for your observation, that is interesting. The physics of impact on beach sand seems to scale up pretty well with the huge dimensions of the surface on Mars. I was struck by these particular step marks because of the interesting broken patterns on the flanks of the depressions. The steps were probably made at night when the sand was moist, and later dried up to give the broken patterns.
