The Mercedes-Benz Unimog is a heavy-duty utility vehicle that is designed to adapt to many different uses: cargo van, dump truck, snow plow, flatbed truck, mobile crane, etc. If there ever was a "wonder vehicle," this is it. It could be considered a combination of a 1940s-era Jeep, a Hummer, and a Land Rover (and more?). I saw many of these in Germany in the 1970s. They are rarely seen in the United States: since 1980 I have seen three or four, including this one---too bad. This one is used to transport people and equipment for an outdoor adventure company in Moab.
The outdoor equipment company The North Face honored this vehicle in the early 1970s by naming its utility sleeping bag after it. A Unimog sleeping bag is semi-rectangular and can be zipped open to function as a quilt or comforter.
