In 1931 American publisher George Gough Booth brought Swedish sculptor Carl Milles to Cranbrook to serve as his sculptor in residence
and to teach sculpture at Cranbrook Academy. The great Orpheus Fountain by Milles at Cranbrook is a replica of one he designed
for Stockholm, Sweden now located at the entrance to the Stockholm Concert Hall. The fountain is a basin with eight figures
of bronze based on the myth of Orpheus. It was completed in 1936 and is a piece which has become synonymous
with Cranbrook.
The eight bronze figures are frozen with their backs to the double ring of jets shooting water above their heads as they listen to
Orpheus, the Greek god of music, playing on a lyre given to him by Apollo.
