A Riot of Pattern

by Helen Betts

Istanbul, Turkey

This is the lobby of the Çiragan Palace Hotel, the old part of which is actually a palace from Ottoman times. It is simply fascinating from a photographic point of view, and we spent several hours there on Sunday, both indoors and out (it is located on the shore of the Bosporus with a spectacular view). This image was a nightmare to process between distortion, high ISO, color, varying light sources, very shallow DOF, etc., but I liked it and thought it was a good example of pattern gone crazy!

Sony DSC-H1
1/15s f/3.5 at 7.7mm iso200, handheld, full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

The colors you achieve in virtually all of your shots that I've seen are outstanding. Your post production was so skillfully accomplished that it didn't come to mind while enjoying the photo.

Thanks, ian and oVan, too. oVan, I didn't submit the other one as it was taken with a Nikon camera. I thought about putting it into exhibition, but just ran out of time :-(. Helen

This is so beautiful! Just a little question: why didn't you (also) enter this photo into this challenge:http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/60926198
I think it would suit the theme even better...

Thank you for the wonderful comments! I really almost gave up trying to process this and actually fell asleep during the third try this morning, waking up at 3 a.m. to as good as the image was going to get. I'm currently processing more pictures of this hotel; if anyone is interested, they are at the end of this page:http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/istanbul_revisited&page=5 Helen

Wow! If there was such a thing as an Easter House, this would be it. This is a fantastic photo, the colours, the lines, the patterns all in one. This takes the cake for this challenge! Well done!

I agree with Katherine, I don't see any problems with this image! Apart from that, it's fantastic! There's so much color and pattern to absorb here that, with each viewing, one's bound to find something new in the picture every time! Excellent!

Beautiful composition and color patterns! You must have done a good job in processing, because I don't see any of those problems you mention.

OMG, Helen. This shot takes my breath away. It's absolutely beautiful. You've done a magnificent job with the framing & lighting; the symmetry is perfect. It's hard to believe this was a handheld shot at f3.5! Now folks will be touting the H1 as an architectural camera! (With good reason). I want a coffee table book of your photos!
