"This is a great pair of related ideas to explore, either one or the other, or a combination of the two, and the opportunities to capture a shot that fits exist all around us! Everywhere we look, we can encounter things with interesting textures and/or patterns! However, in the spirit of the word 'challenge' let's try for photos that hold up on two levels simultaneously: 1) realism of the subject(s), where the elements are identifiable, portrayed in a realistic manner, and 2) abstract formation, where the textures and/or patterns intrigue the viewer into further exploration of the elements, beyond their static, obvious aspects.
