As I stand by the edge of the Colorado River with my back to the water, I see
this: a tiered river bank infested with tamarisk. The tiers acted as steps,
making it easy to get to the top of the bank. As I prepared to blaze a trail
through the brush I noticed that some branches---now faded in color---had been
cut years ago: someone else had come ashore at the exact same spot and cleared
a path through the tamarisk. What a coincidence! The intervening years had
allowed the brush to grow back, mostly obscuring whatever path had been hacked
out of the vegetation. Beyond the brush one can see the ridge atop the mesa
of the Goose Neck. Let the brush-clearing begin...
