Agrocybe praecox7214.JPG

Westmoreland Sanctuary

This is a very common mushroom of Spring found on wood chips and rotting fallen wood. Depending on weather conditions, the caps of one group of specimens can look different than another. The Spring Agrocybe (Agrocybe praecox) has a wettish brown-tan cap. It also has a partial veil that leaves an ephemeral ring on the upper stipe. As the mushroom matures you may only see a ring on brownish spores remaining as evidence of a ring.

There are other Agrocybes that are very similar looking to Agrocybe praecox. One is Agrocybe dura (Firm Agrocybe) that has a drier and hardier cap which becomes more cracked or aereolate as the cap opens. It also has a rather emphemeral ring. (See next photo of Agrocybe dura).

The Maple Agrocybe (Agrocybe acerola) looks a lot like Agrocbye praecos and Agrocybe dura, but it has a partial veil that remains on the stipe as a floppy ring. (See photo of Agrocybe acerola for comparison).
