Lower and upper benches

Colorado River, below Shafer Trail, Utah

Looking south, with the Colorado River hidden behind the greenery on the right.
This was taken from the lower bench, which is about four feet (1.2m) above the
level of the river. Straight ahead is the upper bench, fifteen to twenty feet
(4-6m) higher and composed of purplish sandstone. The return hiking route angles
slightly left to reach the upper bench, which leads to the background terrain.
The white boulders are chunks of White Rim sandstone that long ago fell
from the top of the cliff at left.
