This photo provides conclusive evidence that this skink is a coal skink. Coals are difficult to find across their range, but are easily distinguished from all other members of the Eumeces genus by the presence of only a single, unbroken post-mental scale. That is the second scale behind the tip of the chin. All other eastern north american Eumeces have a transversely split pair of postmental scales.
