All six racers approach the home pylon for the first time; from there they go on the clock for six laps. To the delight of the Rare Bear crew and supporters atop the trailer, John Penney in the Bear trips the clock a few lengths in front of Dago Red. The two airplanes roar past the crowd making a truly glorious noise. John Penney's got the Bearcat wound up to emit an indescribably complex, low, gutteral howl that trails off in the stuttering bark of the exhaust as it passes by; the Mustang sounds like, well, a P-51, but tuned to an altogether more inistent, menacing register.
