John Penney, an airline pilot from Colorado, is Rare Bear's race pilot. Excitement is building: The Bear holds the piston-engine straight-line speed record at 528 mph, but hasn't competed for several years after engine problems kept it out of the final race in 1999. This year Rare Bear has qualified in first place at over 495 mph, a couple of mph faster than Dago Red. The Bear is back!
