In this part of the country, with cloud bases as low as they are it's impossible to keep an airport within gliding range. Not that an engine failure is likely, but glider pilots are trained to think like that. Airports are few and far between: Ship Rock, Kayenta, and Page are our only good options along the 250 mile route to Bryce Canyon, and much of the terrain is like this, in the Chuska Mountains: unlandable.
