Note that by decreasing the EXPOSURE slider from +1.3 to + 0.7, the clipped highlights are almost gone. Now the only clipped highlights are very bright spots in the wing. Also note that by decreasing the SHADOW slider from the DEFAULT of +7 down to zero, the most of the shadow clipping is corrected.
It is sometimes necessary to decrease the CONTRAST slider with these high dynamic range shots in order to get both the highlights and shadows under control. This was the case with this shot. The CONTRAST slider was decreased from the default value of +15 down to +9.
Fortunately these changes did not make a drastic effect on the background of the image. Had that been the case, we might decide to make multiple exposures from the same RAW file and merge these together in PhotoShop ~ not an easy task ~ but one that we sometimes have to do to save the shot.
With the shadows and highlights under control and a nice background, select OPEN to commit the changes and open the image in PhotoShop for further editing. Note that I am exporting this image in 16 bit mode ~ to allow for the additional headroom that manipulating images offers in PhotoShop.
