You always see photos of Natives Americans smoking a peace pipe at the signing of a treaty. Usually within the next 10 years , the treaty would be broken by the white men and natives were too weakened in number from smallpox to do much about anything but take it. Free blankets were handed out in winter to natives with a good dose of smallpox dabbed on them for luck. Needless to say , many natives died from smallpox or drank themselves to death as their way of life was over.
