Pioneer Square Totem Pole ( Stolen from Tongass Island)

Seattle, Washington

Actually the the original one was in 1899 and was put up in Pioneer Square Oct. 18th 1899. By 1938 it had rotted and an arsonist had burned in mostly up. Seattle sent it back to the Tlingits in Alaska to have them make another with a check for 5,000. They sent a note back and cahsed the check sying, " That 5,000 covered the first one you stole" . Seattle had to sent another 5,000 for the one that is there presently.
