All work done in Photoshop CS

Duplicated background layer, then made a pattern out of part of the lighter background.
Used healing brush set to the pattern, lowered opacity to 67%, then went over all lighter areas and some of trees, to make them seem almost lost in 'fog'.

Made non-destructive dodge/burn layer by clicking, ALT-new layer, set mode to Opacity, then clicked on Fill with Overlay - Neutral color - 50% gray.
Lowered opacity to 49%.
Set foreground and background colors to default black & white, clicked on my paintbrush.
Used smallish brush, varying depending on area, set to soft, went over the black areas, lighting burning (with black as foreground), switched to white, and went over the light areas on woodpecker, dodging them.

Merged all visible layers, cropped, set correct size to width 800, defaulting for height.

Made new layer, used healing brush - pattern, again, this time bringing opacity a little lower. Zoomed image to 200%, used small brush set to soft, used eyedropper to grab red from his head, made a smidge redder, then went over his crest.
Did the same for the white & black areas.

Didn't want it to be overly obvious, so kept opacity low.
Still on same layer, used gaussian blur, set to 1.0 to blend in edges.

Merged/flattened image and saved. :) Christine
