Some of this species of sparrow spends the winter at nearby Slate Creek Wildlife Area in Sumner County, Kansas. The catch is they are seldom seen as they normally stay hidden foraging for food in deep grasses. If seen, it is usually for about a second as they pop out of the grass for a second only to dive right back in as they change their feeding spots, or if one is flushed while treading too close walking through the prairie. I had been trying for a few months to capture them with no success when on an unusually warm afternoon a handful popped out to roost near and on a fence line and enjoy the welcome winter Sun. When I put my 800mm lens on one and realized what I was viewing, it was difficult to steady the lens for the fifteen or so shots I was able to snap. They are spectacular sparrows!
