If it's a weekend, then it must be the battlefield at sunrise. I guess doing this shot on a regular basis is called working the subject. You never know, when you leave the house in the cold & dark, what you're going to see an hour later - sometimes nothing except dark cloudy skies & sometimes nice color like this. But if it's cold, there's no doubt what you'll feel (or the case of fingers & toes - not!). It's a bummer when you discover that you should have stayed in bed.
This is a double exposure composite - one exposed for the sky which gives a totally black canon, and one exposed for the canon which gives a mostly blown out sky. Combine the two in Picture Window Pro's Composite Blend using a contrast mask.
