Canon 300D with 50mm f/1.8 Lens and Hoya R72 IR Filter

Equipment

Equipment I Currently Use for IR

Equipment:  Canon 300D, Canon 50mm f/1.8, Hoya R72 IR Filter, Tripod, Cable Release
Software:  Photoshop Elements 3.0 (with added actions for Channel Mixer and Curves)
Misc:  Shooting RAW for flexibility with Exposure & White Balance
Misc:  Using Noise Ninja Plug-In for noise reduction

In case you are wondering, yes I have a 52mm to 58mm step ring between the lens and filter. Ironic that my R72 was purchased for a different lens because I use it exclusively on this 50mm f/1.8 lens that has a diameter of 52mm. Perhaps this actually works out OK for me as the setup maybe even works as a mini lens hood! I will still put on my rubber lens hood if I think it might be required.

The 300D is not noted as being a 'good' camera for IR photography; but, if you can accept long exposure times, it will work. You can get a 300D camera modified (removal of the IR cut filter) and then exposure times will enable hand held work rather than requiring a tripod. I am not ready to dedicate my only dSLR camera to IR...

Actually, this specific photo was taken with a little crappy 2.0MP camera,
which suprisingly has always treated me very well when I take just a little bit of care and effort when using it. full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Hi Dave, Great article!! I'm looking into Infrared photography. I have a Canon 300D and also a Canon 5D digital cameras. I do not want to modify either of these cameras. Can I get good infrared images without modifing these digital cameras using the Hoya R72 IR or the Hoya RM72 IR filter? Thanks

hi dave..im trying to learn from your post. i use a 'crappy' lil 2mp oly 2000 and a 2100UZ for IR and so far they have been the best. i have tried an oly 4000, no success yet. im now going to try the 300D setup you have shown here. you can see some of my starts at
