Regardless how it was done it is one cool animation. It made me both smile and think hard for a minute there... Well done Ernst!

I'm guessing that these images were animated in reverse order, yes? The giveaway is the plants growing under the two rocks that disappear from the foreground. Otherwise, it appears that you stood up that big frickin' rock, but it seems more likely that it was pulled over for the first shot in the animation. (Last shot taken.)
