What you see today was built mainly in the 15th century.
It superseded a smaller stone building that had itself taken the place of the original wooden church of 1220.
The Doom painting over the chancel arch is [claimed to be] the largest in England, and was painted around 1475 as a thank-offering for a safely returned pilgrim.
The painting was white-washed over during the Reformation, and remained forgotten until the 19th century, when it was rediscovered and restored.
