A Surprise in the Dark

Our first day, actually a very full half-day, was finished and we headed back to the compound in the dark. I noticed we were driving very slowly, much slower than conditions would call for, in my opinion. The Zulu tracker in the back of the Land Rover (an amazing vehicle, by the way)was alert and occasionally fired-up a powerful hand-held light, looking off into the bush. I wondered what was going on until this creature appeared from nowhere. I understood that one must be cautious even when they know the "road." Danger lurks at every tree, bush and curve. I was comforted by the fact that those in charge knew what they were doing.
