One of the things that’s a blessing and a problem of us both doing photo a day is that we often fight about who can use what subject matter. Today is one of those days. I’ve been working on a presentation all day while David has been hard at work snapping these flies.
When I’d finished work and walked the dogs, he was still at it so I sat and watched him for a while and he’d really got his lighting down to a tee – I really saw how much difference the use of a reflector made and how much his shots had moved on from the first ones he did this morning.
I suppose it’s a bit like my work really – I had some ‘blank canvas’ this morning and by a mix of my own work and pinching a few bits from elsewhere, I’d ended up with something I was quite pleased with. He’d done the same with his photos. Today, I knicked his set up and simply made my own composition in his work area....they've turned out totally different.
Last night, when we were shown these little things, this one caught my eye. To me it looks a bit like a dragon fly – I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be but apparently trout will go wild for a tasty morsel that looks like this. They’ll be so hungry that they chomp the ‘fly’ then end up skewered on the nasty bit of metal underneath……suckers!
For me, the stupidity of the fish doesn’t actually excuse the fact of shoving a metal spike through its cheek/lip/whatever and hoiking it out of the river or lake but then my little veggie world recognises that, as my Mum would say ‘each to his own’ – unless, that is, they want to do it in my space, which we had a heated debate about last night.
DM had to intervene when I said I’d be prepared to shoot anyone who chased a fox over our land and say he’d visit me in prison…..I understood the government had actually a. banned fox hunting and b. accepted that people could use any amount of force to repel an intruder committing an act of violence in their home – to me that says that to shoot at a fox hunter, who is in your garden should be applauded not castigated.
Anyway, the top and bottom of this is that we (me and ‘im, the hippy, veggie, Spurs fans) sometimes find ourselves at odds with family who are pro-hunting and Arsenal fans. We just have to agree to disagree on these matters.
Despite it being ‘an instrument of torture/death’ I do actually think this is quite pretty so I thought I’d make it my pic for today much to David’s annoyance because he wanted the ‘fly pic’ so I had to agree to post mine after he posted his – anything for a quiet life!
Oh and by the way – today is my thousandth day – no missed days, no substitutions of something taken on another day, just 1000 straight days in a row of posting a story about my world and a new photo to go with it. Not bad huh?
Two years ago, I was telling a story of good fortune and last year, I was pondering the work:life balance and starting this journey that's now hopefully nearing its end - even though that jigsaw piece refuses steadfastly to slot into place.
