Homeless, Tompkins Square Park, New York City.
“Outlaw” Outlaw was hanging out in the front area of the park. I was sitting at a table not far from him with a homeless woman I have known for a while. (Nancy) Nancy eventually introduced us, and I eventually moved over to talk to Outlaw for a while. He told me he’s been released to the street five years ago, after some stints with the law. He had been in Rikers Island (New York City's largest jail facility) for a short time. Later he was sentenced to prison for a term of fifteen years to life and served ten of those years. Outlaw is now on parole. I asked him what he planned to do now and he replied, “stay out of trouble.” Asked what he might want to say here on the log he said, “it’s better to be an open sinner, than to be a false saint.”
