Notice the walkway to the right. The canal wall is made of concrete at this point, and is at a somewhat lower level than the rest of the towpath and the walkway next to it. I think it is to allow excess water to flow away. In the lefthand corner you can see the old B&O railroad bridge that today carries the Capitol Crescent Trail towards Bethesda.
