Canon 75-300 Lens @ 300mm (100% crop)

And here is the scene at the 75-300's full zoom. While the first two crops in this comparison required very little post-processing, this shot needed a little help to overcome some general softness and loss of contrast, one of the valid complaints against this lens.

That said, there is clearly more detail in this shot than at 200mm and I expect when I reshoot the 70-200 at 200mm it will not be able to match the detail I get with the 75-300 at 300mm either.

I didn't buy a 70-200 because I knew 200mm would not be enough telephoto for me and I didn't want to have to be constantly changing lenses or teleconverters. I have two lenses that cover 17-300mm and that's been enough.
