City & County of San Francisco

San Francisco, California

Transamerica Building.

Bahia de San Francisco was the name given in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi to what is now Drakes Bay, on November 7, 1595.
For 174 years the name remained a vague geographical conception until a detachment of the Portola expedition,
searching for Monterey Bay, beheld the large body of water between them and Point Reyes, from the hills near Point San Pedro on October 31, 1769.
They thought that they were looking upon the original bay or port of San Francisco.
A few days later, when they saw what is now known as San Francisco Bay, they it the "extuary of the port of San Francisco."
The presidio and the mission, La Misison de...San Francisco de Asis (now popularly known as Mission Dolores), were established in 1776.
The town of Yerba Buena was renamed San Francisco in 1847, and the county, one of the original twenty-seven, was created and named in 1850.
