The river was named for Native Americans of the district.
A rancheria called Taulamne and Tahualamne was noted in 1806 on the Stanislaus River.
It is probably a Yokuts Native American word, meaning "cave people," i.e., those who dwell in the rocks and recesses by the rivers.
A Rio de los Towalumnes is shown on the Fremont-Preuss map of 1848. the present spelling was used for the county in 1850.
