This is also called pokeweed or wild poke. I read somewhere that these berries are toxic and that the plant should be avoided by man and beast. However, I also read elsewhere that birds like to eat the berries and that the leaves are also eaten by humans in some places (after they have been washed a couple of times). Appranently it is not such a rare plant, but it is the first time I am noticing it.
