16th August 2005 - on the road again.....

The Lurker is back on the road – well, if truth be told, it’s on the road properly for the first time! When it was rebuilt, David had the engine out of his hot rod Beetle put into it rather than the stock engine that was in the car when he got it.

The trouble was, the big engine has leaked oil ever since it was put into the car and sorting out the leak has meant getting the engine out, stripping it down and rebuilding it. He’s been a bit daunted by this task and I’ve been terrified, having spent more time than I’d have ideally wanted under his bus trying to balance the engine on a jack while he tried to disconnect then reconnect it. I’m no woos or girlie but I hate that sort of job.

Anyway, with me refusing point blank to help with this task, he let the time drift on…..the tax and insurance ran out, as did the MOT. Then it was winter and not much fun for working in the garage in the cold. He finally got going when Mike (R) volunteered to help – thanks Mike, that’s something for which I will remain eternally grateful.

You’ll have seen all his engine bits and bobs in his PotD by now if you are a viewer of his pages.

Tonight, I got home from work feeling pretty misog and came in to find that he was jumping around after having just got the car MOTd and insured. Woo hoo. We decided to go for a spin around the block to celebrate – well, if you want the hard truth, we went to take a basket of ironing to our ironing service whose van has broken down. It’s always a joy being in the car because it’s such a pretty little thing that everyone looks and waves as we pass.

While we were on the road, I just noticed how devilishly handsome DM looked behind the wheel so I asked him to pose for me when we got home. This is the moment when I confess that I have a real weakness for old cars and chromey ones are at the top of my list. Add DM to this heady mix and we have a recipe for happiness returning to my world.

Two years ago I was capturing chilli oil....not terribly well I now think and a year ago, we were walking the Hurlers.

Well, I wouldn't really call it a rebuild, not even a top end overhaul, but stripping it down to the longblock and putting it back together was quite a task...!
