Boat Lady (Ashok Viswanathan)

Author Comment:
taken at the floating market near Bangkok. While I was shooting the boats
and the fruit sellers, I noticed this lady rowing her empty boat slowly back up the
canal. She has sold all the fruit and vegetables for the day and seemed in no hurry
to go home. As she paddled along she was watching the hordes of visitors on the
banks of the narrow canal and the other boats still trying to sell their products. I
was standing just behind bunch of “puppets” hanging from a rack when I noticed her
slow down and a smile lightened her face as she checked the puppets out. I guess it
made her day. It reminded her of something pleasant. The incongruity that a
villiage lady in a narrow canal rowing her boat, and who has probably seen it all
can still smile at a funny looking puppet for sale. the puppet on strings has an
appeal for people of all ages.
