1659 - Day 4
Defensive Gesture

Lincoln, Nebraska

This is the first day a chick has raised its wing as the camera lens approached.
It is a good sign that the feathers and wing muscles are developing quickly.

On the first day the chicks were so comfortable with me and my camera on the tripod
that they literally were falling asleep between shots. Now the nest is about eye level
so I have to raise the camera over my head in a more menacing posture, perhaps.

The mother seems to leave the nest for the night about 8 pm, just as it's getting dark,
and returns in the early morning and stays with the chicks all day long. This behavior
seems strange, but perhaps she is more concerned about jays and crows from carrying
the chicks away, rather than some ambush from a cat during the night.
