Mourning Dove Rescue

My wife noticed two mourning dove chicks on the driveway when she took out some trash in the morning.

For the first day we created a makeshift nest and raised it higher throughout the day.

I found one baby mourning dove out on a front lawn and my dad and I took it in. We took care of it for about 5 days. When we took it in it was only about 4 days old. it died in the morning of day 5 or 6.it died right in my hands. It started of fine but the night before it was cold. We put a blanket over it but it seemed to have crawled out of it in the middle of the night. it was wheezing after my parents had fed and then as i said, died in my hands....about 1 hour after. Could i have prevented it?
