Charming *

This has to be one trickiest shots I have taken. I was about 2.5 inches away from this cobra and was a little skeptical of getting any nearer hence stayed at this distance. It’s besides the point that the cobra was within easy striking distance of my arm (and I was extremely apprehensive in spite of the snake charmer’s assurances that the snake wouldn’t leap towards my throat, strangle me with it’s body whilst digging it’s fangs in my face) but at the 17mm end of my lens, I had to get this close to take this photograph.

I guess I was lucky to come across this snake charmer today (only the third I have ever seen in my life and had been trying to locate one for the last couple of years); his name is Ram Kumar and he captured 3 poisonous snakes from the Railway Museum (which were posing a hazard for the visitors there so he was called in to capture the snakes as opposed to killing them) and this was one of the three he has with him.

Well, truth is ... the venom glands were taken out. How can one tell? See the caved in area behind its eyes, when the glands are out, it caves in, when the glands are in, you don't see the cave in but rather a bump behind the eyes. Superb shot though

Vikas,

I'd have probably fallen back on my ass, screaming like a girl, if that had happened to me. And that is assuming I'd work up the courage to even *try* that shot wide-angle.

Vikas, clearly you are insane, but not as insane as the man holding the snake! :)

Thanks Phil/James. Actually he was toying with me cause when I was trying to take this particular pic, he stealthily brought the snake closer and closer to the lens and that is why he was smiling thus. After I finished taking this shot and lowered my camera, I realised just how close the snake was and he was laughing seeing my expression :-)

Cheers, Vikas.

What an amazing shot, even not knowing what you went through to get it. The added depth from the wide-angle makes the snake feel closer to the viewer, as though the handler is pushing him out of the frame at you. The expression on the handler's face really makes this shot for me--he's looking at you like you're toying with something dangerous.

Fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
It's the one thing I've found with this challenge - that you have to get *so* close to everything... but no, I wouldn't have with this snake. Oh no.

Thanks everyone... have to say that looking back now, maybe I shouldn't have gotten this close but at that time all I could think of was to get the pic. :-) Incidentally, if anyone wants to see the Cobra up, close and personal, here it is:

Taken with the 70/200IS lens. Cheers, Vikas.

Oh man, I would love to have taken this shot...and yes, I WOULD get that close with a wide angle lens. My husband dreads the day we come across a live snake in our travels cos I'll be right there, sticking my lens in it's face.
GREAT capture!

YOU'RE OUT OF YOUR FREAKING MIND!!! LOL! I can NOT believe you got this close to this animal! Wonderful shot, beautiful, majestic creature, but man, you're crazy to get that close. I vote for this one for the most dangerous capture in any challenge! LOL! I love snakes, but I wouldn't get anywhere within reach of a venomous one. ACK! I would have been taking this with a 300mm! LOL! ~ Lonnit

Very well held together especially under the circumstances. We can all imagine how brave we would be, but only you were there. Top shot.

Vikas, you're a braver man than I. I'd skip the opportuniy for a photo if I had to this close.

That is very cool picture. Love the detail on the snake and DOF on the handler. theFly
