7th July 2005 - we will not be beaten

There has been a surreal air to today, since I first received an email from David asking had I heard that the London Underground was closed due to 'power surges'. Of course we all know now what really caused the closure.

Our offices have been strangely quiet and there has been much hushed talk in corners while we have all waited nervously for news of our colleagues who are based in our two city offices, both only yards from Liverpool Street Station. Just as I was about to leave the office, the news we'd been waiting for - our HR Director had sent me an email to spread the word that our team is all accounted for and although there are some grim stories from those in the team who were on affected trains, at least our own people are all safe and on their way home tonight.

There is still no real news about the total number of fatalities - the bus that was bombed was so badly obliterated that they can't even work out how many people were on board, let alone identify them all. It's complete carnage.

It is not the first time our capital city has been the subject of terrorist attacks - we've been through this kind of thing for years with the IRA and now this invidious creeping sickness from much further away.

Never though will this sort of thing kill the spirit of our city or make us acquiesce to the demands of terrorists. If we do, they win and we lose our freedom and our right to the lives we have fought hard to build. The people of London will recover and will be more resolute and stronger. There can be no alternative.

Suicide bombers are not heroes they are cowards who don't have the courage or the will to fight for what they want through democratic means. Their desire to impose their views on others will never work. They are people with no respect for life. As their shattered bodies fall to the ground that is the end of their legacy. They will not get reward in heaven. Their souls will not find themselves in a better place and they will never gain heroic status for their lives from any decent human being. Those people that suggest otherwise are lying and manipulative. Those people who commit these acts or support them all claim to believe in God. This means they will surely end up in Hell in their language. Personally I think they will only end up as a bloody mass of offal, bone and skin on the pavement or a train or whatever and they will be forgotten instantly.

They take with them ordinary people who don't deserve this. They leave a legacy of misery and sorrow for the families of the ordinary people killed.

London is a vibrant city that thrives on its diverse cultural mix and we love that about the city. Make no mistake, we despise these people and will not be cowed by them.

My family and friends all seem to be fine. We've had a bush telegraph of emails and phone calls checking in and checking out. I am thankful but I am also mindful that many people in and around London are not so lucky as I am. I hope they find ways to rebuild their lives.

So, this is my response to the terrorists! We will not be beaten!

My final hope for today is that the perpetrators (because we don't know they were all killed in the attacks) are hounded until they are found and punished. Let there be no escaping justice for anyone involved in this.

Last year I was messing about with mirrors and two years ago, I was in central London making a fool of myself on a train.

"Any country that shelters these cowards should be leveled and turned into Disneyland East."

Oh really? Does the same go for the US and it's support for the IRA and their acts of cowardly terrorism on UK soil?

Nice picture Linda, says it as it is. We don't bow to terrorism here in the UK, never have, and never will.

and today... it's as if nothing really happened. The busses are full again and we just get on with it. Great photo.

No - we should never wage war against a country because that's where a suicide bomber has come from. That is as indiscriminate and stupid as the act itself. It's the people who did this wicked thing that deserve to be punished, not their compatriots.

The news was a shock this morning. We weren't too far from that area one week ago. I'm glad to hear everyone you know seems to have been safe from the worst of it.

It's like Sept. 2001 all over again, but on the other side of the pond.
Your photo conveys my sentiments as well.
Any country that shelters these cowards should be leveled and turned into Disneyland East.
Damn cowards...every last one of the afraid of a fair fight.
I hope of of those suicide bombs goes off in THEIR homes while strapping it on.
I hope Tony opens up a can of whoop ass.

Well put Linda.

We've almost become numb to these acts of aggression against civilians.

Seems just as we begin to get all comfy again, they rear their ugly heads
to end a few more lives of hard-working innocents and destroy families.

Obviously, the perpetrators are brainless zombies with little in the way
of feelings....

Linda, I am so glad you are ok. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and everyone else over there in London. I worked a few blocks from the WTC on 9-11-01 and happened to be off that day. Such an attack on your land, your home, and your blessed country changes you forever. Love to All, Maureen ( Jeanne Ricci's sister-in-law).

HEAR! HEAR! Now 7-7 will resonate throughout the world. I send my prayers . . . bot more so . . if there is a blood drive or a money drive, I WILL contirbute. London and NYC are sister cities, I feel. I could not get to PBase all day and worried about you and DM. When I saw your post,I simultaneously felt a sigh of relief and a surge of defiance. I need a Union Jack . . . I want it flying beside the Stars and Stripes.

Excellent response.. I was so happy when my friends in the UK checked in by email.
London is wonderful walking city that we all should visit.

I will never, ever, forget the absolute terror on a friend's face today when she couldn't find out all morning whether her boyfiend was safe. Thank God he is! Unfortunately, many many people were in the same boat as it was necessary for the mobile companies to block the network so that the rescue services had clear lines.

How differently we felt at lunchtime today from the same time yesterday when a cute 4 year old and I were squealing with delight and dancing round the kitchen after the momentous victory of the 'battle' to win the Olympic Games in 2012. Although in time that joy will return as we watch the whole of East London rejuvenated in the build up (literally) to the event, at this moment the Olympic Games seems so irrelevant (and this comes from a HUGE fan).

I sat watching the TV in horror, and had to switch off every time a little guy came in the room. For months after 9/11 our 'big' boy (then 2) had nightmares because he (briefly) saw images of the atrocities in NY. Our children shouldn't be scared to travel in our beloved city so they won't be seeing any of this.

I am so grateful that my family are all safe and that you weren't in London today Sis.

Love, Jan XXX

My thoughts go out to the people of London, to the families that are victims of such a cowardly act. I'm glad you are ok
Guest 07-Jul-2005 21:33
Glad you're ok, and agree with everything you say!

Glad to hear that all is fine with your family and friends. Excellent message. This hit close to home because my sister spent a year in college in London and I have cousins there which I have not heard from today. These terrorists surely will end up in hell.

Good for you, Linda. May they go to hell, where they certainly belong. It's good to know that you and others are OK.

Very strange day, today. Like your message though. :-)
