+ Winter at Bracken Place by JDU

Golden Grove, Adelaide, South Australia

My dog Molly and I often pass this lamp/sign on our walks. I like the lighting on the trees as the sun goes down. I wanted to show the upwards looking perspective and to emphasise the wintery theme. This image from a reshoot replaces my original entry. I'm more satisfied with the lighting and the overall effect of this one, including the vertical luminosity gradient of the sky being opposite that of the trees and lamp. I hope my effort feels cold to you too.

I really liked this shot a lot for a number of reasons. The great perspective looking up is compelling as is the gradient of color behind the entire scene. The light is a strong and vital element to make the work come alive with contrasts. Rough against the smooth sky as well as dark against light. The interplay of contrasts or differences of elements works well here. “Difference causes visual interest.” Now here is why I held back some on my evaluation of the piece. It is blue but I am not visually convinced that this was shot as blue. Now there us nothing wrong in using any means necessary to make a piece work, but I kept feeling a little confused as to the source if the color. Not quite sure I can verbalize this point exactly. I think the blue fringing on the lamp fixture is right on target, but again I’m not so sure about the bluish text on the sign. Finally I keep looking for some bluish tinge on the pole. All in all a beautiful image.

Thanks Bruce. The pseudo-snow perception is part of what I wanted to create and what I see too, so I'm glad you can see it too. :^) With each new version, the curves change to alter the character of this one in some way and I like this version the best too. Even the writing on the sign is not quite so overtly blue as in former versions. I'm glad I could retain the sky gradient without destroying the smoothness as this is really close to the processing limits.

John,
Outstanding image! So cool! I almost want to think those trees have been dusted with snow. I like this version the best. The perspective accentuates the vertical lines. Nice job! -- Bruce

I went back to a taller version of this one, but with more space at the top too, as I wanted to emphasise the upward looking aspect. PBase had some problems with thumbnails, so I ended up removing the image and reposting it from scratch and moving it back to the same spot in the gallery. It all seems right now, but all previous comments are lost.
