6th June 2005 - spam, spam and more spam

This photo is the culmination of three unrelated events in my day.

Event 1 – I heard on the wonderful airwaves of Radio 4’s Today programme that there is a Broadway show of the Monty Python film ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ – groan! I’m so glad to live in the UK if that is the sort of stuff that’s finding its way into the supposed great land of theatre in the USA. I just don’t get it at all – DM says that it’s something only boys who were thirteen in 1975 can appreciate and if so, I feel vindicated in saying I just can’t abide the old tosh! (Not having been a thirteen year old anything in 1975.) Whatever makes supposedly intelligent people want to go to see Spamalot, as the new play is called, is quite beyond me. I’ll probably get laods of flaming now from ex-spotty yoofs of the 70s proclaiming it’s a masterpiece of modern culture or some such nonsense but I’d like to think that I know better on this occasion.

Later on, I opened up my pbase account to discover yet more spam on pbase. Is anyone else suffering from it? I’m getting three or four spam messages a day on my pictures, galleries and guestbook telling me about online poker and loans. I’m pretty sick of it to be honest and I don’t understand why it’s coming on mine so regularly when DM hasn’t had a single one. I’ve emailed Emily to see whether it’s a common problem but not had any feedback from her yet.

Then, to add to my frustration, I got a pmail from one Dr TITO MBOWENI whose pbase login is the_governor and guess what? It’s spam! It’s one of those age-old requests to help get money out of Nigeria – so what do these people think I am? Some kind of idiot? Only someone with little or no previous use of email wouldn’t have seen these messages on email before. This individual has no photos online and is simply using the forum as a way to spread his evil messages. So, Dr Mboweni (if that’s your real name) here’s a message from me – get stuffed – go and ply your vile trade elsewhere and leave me alone. Has anyone ever heard that urban myth that people who have ‘taken up’ these offers of vast fortunes in exchange for money laundering have been taken to Nigeria and killed? Is this fact or salacious fiction? Who knows, I don’t.

The final face-to-face confrontation with Spam in my day was walking past it in the aisles of Sainsbury after work while popping in for a few bits and bobs to tide us over until the next ‘big shop’ arrives. I thought to myself that three encounters with the repulsive pink stuff was too many to be ignored so I bought a tin and photographed it. I was trying to get across my message that the contents are not of this world!!!

Will we be eating it tonight? Over my dead body as they say – I even have reservations about feeding stuff like this to my dogs but I know they will love it so it’ll probably find its way into their bowls tonight.

One thing is very disappointing though – the tin isn’t like it used to be ‘in my day’ – I was looking forward to pulling the key off the top and winding it around the tin with that sort of metal tape thingy – ah well, if only life were still full of Horlicks tabs, corned beef hash and condensed milk…….NOT!

Last year I had a sense of achievement from building my pond and the year before I had a frustratingly dull evening stuffing envelopes for my company!

Well dont worry I get it all the time at least one a week, but I now just junk them after reporting them to Yahoo or MSN and if I can I report them to there provider, most of it comes from Nigeria and is known as Nigerian 419, I used to play along with them but it took up too much of my time, but I did try to get them to go to another country to pick up my cash I was sending them but they said they couldnt go, I guess they were too broke, I used to gather as much info on them as I could then tell them I was reporting them to the Fraud Squad, would never hear from them again.

Spam never looked so good indeed. I refer you to the comment I made last year!

I've not received ANY spam as you describe . . .so far. But I imagine it's only a matter of time . . if you're getting it, they know how to get in and it won't be long before there is no respite =[

"Spam spam spam, wonderful spam!"
Python was my era I guess - but I agree that it's generally a boy thing!

Great shot - love the burst of light.

Wow! Spam never looked so good!

You managed to make Spam look good; in the can, that is. I'm sure the dogs will love it especially that weird jelly part! Yeck.

Luckily I haven't received any of those messages either.

I like MP and I was married in 1975, although I got married at age 10, no it was 13, yeah, that's it.

I'm getting the on-line casino messages... Bit of a pain in the proverbial... but what can you do but keep on deleting? :(

Spam never looked so good! I would prefer the tea though.

Monty Python is not the Holy Grail of humo(u)r to me, but occassionally a skit will be funny for about 5 minutes. I've never gotten pbase spam. I get a kick out of those Nigerian money laundering scams. I've never heard of anyone getting killed over it, but people have lost money. See, they need your bank account number to transfer the funds, and then they need to cover some legal expenses, but no trouble, what's $5,000 in fees when you're getting half a million dollars. :) I've never had Spam and I'm glad of it.

I could quote MP endlessly... but I won't as I see I've been beaten to it! from a 14 year old in 1975, so perhaps I am not a true believer lol

I'd just like to take a minute to disagree with DM. I was 14 in 1975 and I get it completely.

ARTHUR:
How do you do, good lady? I am Arthur, King of the Britons. Who's castle is that?
WOMAN:
King of the who?
ARTHUR:
The Britons.
WOMAN:
Who are the Britons?
ARTHUR:
Well, we all are. We are all Britons, and I am your king.
WOMAN:
I didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an autonomous collective.
DENNIS:
You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship: a self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes--
WOMAN:
Oh, there you go bringing class into it again.

lmao! Tony JUST told me last night that he wants to go all the way to NYC to see that play!!!! THAT is funny! (and spam tastes icky! I had it last year at Burning Man...BLECH!)
Eric Hewis06-Jun-2005 20:16
Tonight we agree, (almost)
I love the Goon Show, (And Spam) but I could never see anything funny in Monty Python.
I don't know who designed the ring-pull Spam tin but it's impossible to get it out unless you open the bottom with a tin opener, which doesn't make sense.
Ring-pull cans are one of my pet hates, I've never opened one without splashing my shirt.
Good thing I never drink foul tinned beer*
*Excludes freebies
On the subject of pbase spam, that's something I've never seen, perhaps it's the price of fame.
