This is what most deaf people use to talk on the
phone. We get online and type in www.relaycall.com
and then we enter the number and then add instructions
on the right side such as... "ask for Donna" and then you
enter "GA" which means "Go Ahead" and press the enter
return key. You wait for a little bit and a CA operator
will come on and type in the number you wish to call.
The operator's role is to translate information between
the deaf typist and the hearing person. It acts like a
middleman---seeing the typed sentence from the deaf person
and voicing it for the hearing person. When they hear
the hearing person's response, they type it so the deaf
person can see what the hearing person is saying.
I am probably making it sound more complicated than it really
is! It is actually a very simple process, however it takes
a while! Most of us used TTY's for the past 20 or more years
and that often cost a fortune in phone calls but its free
on the internet and that is very helpful money wise!
***It was a little bit of a challenge to get this photo.
Have you ever tried to take a picture of a computer
monitor? The flicker rate is so bad that it took a lot
of tries to get a picture that was not flickering or had
the ominious black line running across. This is the best
I could do although it is not that sharp.
