27th May 2005 - time to go home....

It’s time to go home to England and what better way to illustrate it than with this photo of a five hundred year old sundial from the palace of Changdeokgung in the heart of Seoul.

This place is the former home of the dynasty of the Korean Royal Family whose line ended around one hundred years ago. It’s magnificent. Once again I have been lucky enough to receive some marvellous hospitality from my hosts here in Korea. ‘JY’, whose real name is unpronounceable to a dim-wit like me but all the Westerners call him ‘JY’, told the gorgeous Bo that she could take the afternoon off and take me sight-seeing before I needed to go to the airport for my flight home. He’s a real gent.

Bo is ‘one hellofalady’ as you might say. She’s really nice and kind, as well as being a perfect host with wonderful English, which she learned while taking a Masters degree at Manchester Uni so she’s dead clever too – I sometimes feel like such an uneducated idiot in the company of these people. Not only that, but when she took me to Changdeokgung, we went on a tour for Japanese Tourists and she translated from Japanese into English for me! This woman is seriously cool…..

My client meeting went well (I think) and certainly the head of our Korean operation seemed very pleased with the way it went. I was guilty though of mucking up the timings for the day because I took too long for my presentation! I am definitely ignorant and probably arrogant too when I say that I was expecting the day to be all presented in English, but in fact the only English spoken was by the three Western presenters, me, our head of Korea and our Asia Pacific Healthcare Manager. So, my presentation was ‘sim-traned’ into Korean and the Korean presentations, questions and answers were translated into English.

After the meeting and lunch, Bo took me to Changdeokgung because it was close enough to the hotel where the meeting took place and it has a ‘secret garden’, which was so tantalising for someone like me who loves her horticulture. The weather has been fabulous – perhaps too much so, Bo and I were both wilting by the time we’d been walking in the sun for an hour. I will post more from here when I get home but this is all I can do for now as I sit and wait for my flight.

I took loads of pics but have been kicking myself as I sit here in Seoul airport reviewing what I took because I’m still so dumb as to make basic mistakes with my camera and the gorgeous sunny, contrasty day was done no favours at all by my leaving the camera set on DMs fake Jeanne ‘vivid mode’ that he set for me after I saw her use it on the G6…..He did it because I love bright, colourful images as all who come to these pages know. I should have reset to normal mode but didn’t and so the photos are not a patch on what they should be. That’s the reason for the hugely overblown highlights on the top of this shot…..though I must say, I quite like them!

Anyway, I’m on my way home, back to DM, dogses, wabbit (for now there is only one) and chooks. I have a feeling I may never be happier to see Barry, my ever-faithful taxi driver as I will at 5.30am tomorrow when I get back.

I am numb with tiredness, the ground is swaying beneath my feet and I can’t string a sentence together – add to this the fact that it’s already many hours since I had a shower, it’s been very hot and I am sticky, dusty and my hair is flying around like a crazy woman. I still have a 20 hour flight to home before I can shower again……I somehow think I’ll be more pleased to see them all than they will be to see me.

It has just been brought home to me how far away I am from home - it is the end of a long day here and I am posting for 27th....while I've been online, DM has posted his pic for yesterday!

Last year I was trying to imitate art and two years ago, I was thinking about trains!

I like the light in your photo. What time was it?
It sounds as if the trip went very well and that you had excellent hosts. I can taste the food and smell the smells (aside from that shower part) and feel the heat and activity through your text. I would love to experience it in person, I guess I just have to make plans to travel and follow through.

Gorgeous pic. Hope you had a good trip home. Love David's comment btw. Sounds like you had a great time, Linda. Maybe you'll get into this travelling to Asia thing yet!

I hope you were able to sleep on the trip home.

The lighting and colors on the dial itself are great.

Oh no, I hope I'm going to have to show how to shoot RAW..! btw the wabbit has been renamed 'Roberto Rabbito' due to him looking as miserable as an AC Milan fan on Thurday morning...
