The shadow of the statue of King Louis the Blessed, which stands above the entrance to the church of Sacre Coeur, looms large over the streets. The ghosts of history still ride through Paris, even though its residents may not be aware of them.

this is so very well seen ... I was sure I had already left a comment, but ... it has gone :( anyway: reminds me of don quixote, some how and I also like the little stain on the wall on the right which looks like a little person (perhaps on a horse?)

WOW Ruth...this is powerfull. Man, a slave under comitment and work. Watched over by the greated power...whatever that may be. As it is maerly a shadow that power can be your inner voices, the state, whatever god you are having. Great photo and one you should be proud of.

I spent a few days in Paris at the end of last month - and went with the thourght of your images in mind. I was there on business too, but did get some tiome with the camera - these images are so remarkable for escaping the normal shots. Really well done - I will come back again.

Mikel...you are right that we are all slaves of work. we always are slaves to something or someone no matter how free we think we can get. time for example, always pushes us on. Ana...it's quite an event when something leaves me speechless too, so i can understand!! ;) thanks for commenting anyway, it's nice to hear your thoughts.

The first image you have in this gallery is indeed super powerful, but I think I prefer this one :-) I love it the first time I saw it here, but I couldn't find the right words to tell you about it... Four days later I am still lost here and can't find the right words to leave you a comment on this one. When I love a photo I always have tons of things to say, loving one that leaves me speechless is terrible, but definitely an event!! I surrender!

about the one of the black man and the horse...several things come to my mind... perhaps the first of all, specially looking at the guy's face of tierdness makes me think of slavery times like if the latifundist wold bee untop of the horse and the slave has to walk enfront of him while hard work is beeng done In this case, it also gets to me as a metaphore to our day's but in an other sence in any case aren't we slaves of work too? the shadow is like the invisible pressure that we all have too keep on working, and at the same time the beneficiary of it while we can all identifie with the 'slave'...

I like the stains on the wall, below the tail of the horse, which symbolizes lots of after the fact interpretations :-)

I had to come back to this image again, I like it so much. After reading everyones comments and your interpretation Ruth, I like it even more, and it has provoked more thought. Terrific photo.

Bloody good photo Ruth. At first the thoughts you and others have expressed swirled around my head but eventually I settled for the somewhat more lightweight, pantomime call of “She’s behind you.” Then I read and mulled over the comments and your statement ‘i then also see a similar thing in terms of women and men. the statue is a woman, ALL woman, powerful and not wanting to be oppressed and victimised.’ You seem to have ignored [or overlooked] the fact that the man is black, with the associated racial history of oppression and victimisation that I think far surpasses the problems of womankind. This started another train of thought on the symbology, perhaps he is leading her into battle? perhaps she supports his struggle for freedom? Perhaps … well, perhaps other can see even more. However you look at this , it is a most thought provoking image. And beyond all that, I really like it!

Your fans are taking the words right out of my mouth, Ruthie. Scale incongruity, indeed. The shadow play here makes a point -- the ghosts of history still ride through Paris, even though its residents may not be aware of them. The shadow is an abstraction, the scale is incongruous, and the concept of larger than life dead saints tracking us down expresses a very special human value: accountability. This is a spectacularly expressive image.

Great Image, the shadow looms above the man and then a smaller shadow shrinks below him. Scale incongruity throughout.
