1st Special Service Force

The 1st Special Service Force:

Activated as a joint Canadian-American organization on July 9th,
1942, at Fort William Harrison, Montana. The Force was formed
into three regiments and a service battalion and was originally
organized under the concept that it would be employed behind
enemy lines to destroy vital installations and facilities
(Operation Plough) during winter. For various tactical reasons,
this planned operation was abandoned and the Force trained and
had two changes of station before embarking on July 11th, 1943,
as part of the Kiska Task Force.

The shoulder patch worn by the men of the 1st Special Service
Force was approved on September 14th, 1942, and was approved
for wear by Canadians assigned to the unit. The patch is in the
shape of an Indian spearhead with the words USA and Canada. The
design was selected and approved by both governments based on
their similar pioneer heritage.
