4th: Yoko Geri by Abstract

The side kick (Yoko Geri) is one of the most powerful of all the karate kicks.
One can use side of the foot when striking at the throat or neck (like shown here, lift the big-toe for the angle), whereas the heel of the foot is best for all other targets such as the solar plexus, ribs or head.

Excellent shot. Have any more? I love karate feet :)

Thank you for commenting, Ioana...dont worry about the smell, i washed my foot very well before the shot :) and btw wrinkles are from twisting the foot. -Abstract

Cool shot! I hope that foot is wrinkled from a long bath, 'cause it looks so close I can pretty much smell it through the monitor! Great job!

Thank you Pedro, Lee, Mary Anne, Rich, Jano, Rod, Alexeig. I was away on a mountain bike trip so couldnt reply earlier.
Jano, you got it right...holding it wasnt painful but get it at right place for the dof/composition part, exactly at 10sec timer was difficult.
Rod, how in the world do you come up with these remarks...hahaha "nut-kick" its hilarious. foot looks all wrinkled because its at an angle (parallel to the lens). you are supposed to hit oppponents throat with the side of the foot, which can be done by twisting your foot and pulling big-toe up.
Alexeig, i started with Shotokan but then switched to Tae-fu-do (combination of Tae-kwon-do, Kung-fu, Judo) type of martial art...its not very popular but its aspect of adopting from various arts appealed me alot. not to mention that was the only school in my city where i could learn some weapons. i learned Nunchaku, Knife(knives) and Stick quite a bit...a little bit Tonfa and Sai too. its all past now. rock-climbing/backpacking/mountain-biking/Sports-motorcycles are new things :)

Excellent, you risk to run the second challenge in a row. The tight crop works very well. What style do you practice BTW?
Rod 22-May-2005 05:49
You do have old feet Abs, look at the wrinkles. Before Karate was invented we used to just kick someone in the nuts which is a lot better as it doesn't take years of training:-) This shot looks really good mate, which is a side benefit of Karate as the nut kick doesn't photograph too well.

Abs - i bow to you - not only in the image of disproportion, but the pain to hold you foot up that long! Kudos! jano

Yes, very good and this helps me understand the topic better. Rich

Just looked at your earlier version. This one has much more impact.

Excellent shot, Abs. The face is just enough in focus to make the facial expression a vital part of the overall effect.

Now that is a big foot! Cool picture.
Guest 20-May-2005 15:44
Waw, it certainly looks better now, but mainly due to the foot filling the top of the frame.

Pedro, i try cloning the chair but then settled down on this tight crop to emphasize more on disproportion/intimidation factor. thanks for making me think on different lines. -Abstract

Thank you RK, Cat, Paul, Pedro...
Cat, dont know about how good i am now. i would say, i almost was about 5 yrs back (appox 8 yrs training). btw this is the only background, and only plain/without-furniture wall, i have in my apt :)
Paul, you are just hilarious. its fun to log in everytime and have a chuckle or two. I cant wait to see what Rod will have to say about this.
Pedro, good point. i thought about cloning out the chair, but then left it for the height reference. i will give it a try though. Thanks for your comments.-Abstract

Excellent Abs. But regarding *, the chair in the lower right should go, it's distracting...
Paul 20-May-2005 10:07
Yeah, i tried to photograph myself doing the Yoki Coki but i split me difference and have spent the last few days in bed with a warm blanket and a tub of vaseline. This is a great shot mr bigfoot, quite intimidating.

Very nice !! I wouldn't want to be at the receiving end! You must be good at this. Like the plain and simple background. -Cat

Abs, just awesome. This picture really gives a sense of perspective and disproportion. Great job.
