SHIELD:
Azure, in bend a giant cactus and a fleur-de-lis
paleways or; on a chief argent a saltire gray surmounted by
a cross gules, charged with an arrow less ways of the third.
The shield is blue, the present infantry color, and the chief is
white, the old infantry color. The arrow and cross represent
participation in the Indian Wars and in the War of 1812; the
cactus indicates service in the Mexican War. The gray saltire
is for service with the Confederate States Army during the Civil
War and World War I service in France is denoted by the
fleur-de-lis. The motto is taken from the reputed command of
Colonel Jefferson Davis to "Stand fast, Mississippians,"
when the other troops were beginning to fall back in the
battle of Buena Vista.
